Scalp Psoriasis

Psoriasis affects almost 2% of the population at one time or another. Trichologists often come into the picture when it gets out of control, infected or progresses to  another condition –  Pityriasis Ameantecea . Ameantecea can be  quite severe and if left untreated often results in a lot of hair fall, due to excessive  scaly plaque  build up. If not treated in its early stages  this can lead to permanant hair loss. Scalp Psoriasis  plaques are  clearly different from surrounding skin,  it can be completely covered with tight scale of which there are often bleeding points underneath. It is common to overlap the forehead but can be found on any part of the scalp. The hair shaft calibre in the plaque area is reduced and the hair cuticle becomes  irregular. It can be itchy but often feels  tight with discomfort. Other areas Psoriasis can  affect, include the knees, elbows, nails and torso. It can be accompanied by painful, stiff and swollen joints with psoratic arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

Psoriasis treatment

The  clinic offers  treatments for all Psoratic scalp conditions . Depending on the plaque severity, a scalp treatment usually takes about  an hour from start to finish, these are described as WET treatments. Patients are provided with shampoos and lotions to use at home in between clinic treatments. In addition dietry  modification may be advised.

Scalp Eczema

Children who have had cradle cap often develop scalp eczema in later life. The scalp will often look inflamed with  greasy scale, this can be very itchy. Other areas of the head may involve the ears.  Temperature changes can often affect eczema. Management  with the correct scalp treatment is important as it can prevent  other complications. Certain dietary factors may aggravate this and in some cases an elimination process may prove helpful. Low essential fatty acids are often implicated in people with such skin conditions. Some people have allergic reactions which can lead to an increase in scale and further inflammation. Nervous tension can sometimes cause a  flare up.[ Severe cases can lead to another more inflammatory  condition called Pityriasis Steatoides. A regular trichological scalp treatment for scalp eczema, combined with  home use products can make  life much more comfortable.

Folliculitis

This is the infection of  hair follicles. This can be caused by a genetic predisposition to acne or  the result of a secondary infected: Eczema, Contact dermatitis, Allergic dermatitis, Neurodermatitis –  (itching) and long term Traction. Folliculitis is normally due to skin abrasion allowing entry of bacteria or yeast or both, which are normally present on the skin surface, and not below the epidermis. If there is follicular infection this can result  in loss of the hair follicle, if this goes unchecked eventually a diffuse thinning to the head will arise. Scarring which may lead to Keloidal formation is more prevalent in those with dark  skin as it has a much higher melanin content. It is important to keep the scalp fauna in balance with correct shampoo medications and hairdressing procedures. This condition can take up to 3 months to get under control.

Looking after your Scalp

A scalp will grow hair accordingly to your genetic make up. However a scalp that is in a poor state due to a health condition that is not managed  will not sustain optimum quality hair growth, in some instances this can lead to hair fall. “Poor diet  can also play havoc with your scalp as well as your skin. The clinic recommends a good skin care supplement and a regular monthly scalp treatment This will clear away  surface plaque and build up, promoting  a healthier scalp.

What do people say about us?

I first visited Stephen Carson 10 years ago as I was losing my hair. This was of concern to me as Mr Carson diagnosed Male Pattern Baldness. I have been treated from that day and am pleased to say that the rate of my hair loss has been greatly slowed down by the treatment. I cant thank Mr Carson enough and would recommend anyone in a similar position.

Mr Matt.S

I went to see Stephen Carson suffering from Psoriasis and Alopecia. The bald patch of hair loss on my head was enormous. I was so pleased, after the fantastic treatments, he cured both the Psoriasis and the Alopecia in a short period of time. I just use the clinic shampoo and prescribed supplement now. I am extremely grateful to him and would highly recommend him.
